BOOK REVIEW: The Couple Next Door, Shari Lapena.

Paperback: 352 pages

Language: English

This book was one of the most talked-about thrillers of the year 2017. I was super excited to pick this one, but it turned out kind of meh for me. Before I state the things I did not like, here is the plot of the book.

Anne is married to the love of her life, Marco, and has a six month old baby girl, Cora. Anne was a successful art curator and once the baby arrives she decides to stay at home to look after her. She is suffering from postpartum depression and all those sleepless nights took a toll on her. Marco tries his best to make her feel better. He even suggests that she should start working again but Anne declines.

Cynthia, the good looking neighbour, invites the couple to her husband’s 40th birthday party. Cynthia not being a big fan of babies requests the baby be left at home. Anne is against it but Marco convinces her, and promises to check on the baby every half an hour. When they come back the crib is empty and the baby missing. What follows is chaos and a lot of blame game. You will be surprised by how low people stoop in their hour of need.

  1. None of the characters made an impact. I felt sorry for Anne at times but I wasn’t able to relate to any of them, and to be honest sometimes the mistakes that they make made them look stupid. Stories with highly unlikable characters are not my thing.
  2. There were a lot of plot twists but they weren’t strong enough. I was hooked till almost 50% of the book and after that I felt like the story had nothing more to offer. It was just about how they got Cora back safely.
  3. I was not convinced by the reason the baby was kidnapped. I can’t say more cause it will be a spoiler then.
  4. Not a huge fan of the way mental illness was dealt in this book. But that’s definitely not the main focus and it was just like another mystery element in this. I totally get it, but was it necessary?

If you are looking for a fast-paced, easy read then do pick this one. This is a definite page turner but personally I was looking for something serious and was kind of disappointed.

PLOT – ⭐⭐⭐
